Our Services Over the years Sonshine has expanded and adapted to meet the various and developing needs of Calgarians. Today we offer four distinct services to the community:

Sonshine Centre

Since 1978 the Sonshine Centre has been bringing help and hope to needy families in Calgary. Over the years the Centre has evolved into a full range of residential programs specializing in helping women and children impacted by family violence. As a long term, second-stage shelter, Sonshine plays a key role in Calgary’s continuum of emergency and second stage shelters. Our dedicated and highly qualified staff provide families with professional and comprehensive programs to help them move toward a future of health and dignity. Centre services include safe, low cost housing, individual counselling, counselling for children, parenting education, life skills groups, one-on-one mentoring, children’s programs and more.

Domestic Violence Outreach Services

In 2008 Sonshine introduced the domestic violence outreach services to offer post-residential support to women completing Sonshine Centre’s residential program, as well as support to women in the community who have not been a resident at Sonshine Centre, but have experienced domestic abuse. Services include, but are not limited to, counseling, safety planning, and assistance in accessing community resources.

Sonshine Community Counseling

Since 1983 counsellors at Sonshine Community Counseling Services have been helping individuals and couples work through issues such as depression, stress, grief, anxiety, communication difficulties, low self-esteem and anger.  While abuse is certainly not the only issue dealt with, special emphasis is given to counseling for individuals suffering from the impact of emotional, physical, sexual and spiritual abuse. All of the counselors, with varied skills, backgrounds and areas of expertise, are trained professionals with graduate degrees from accredited post-secondary institutions. They combine their professional skills with the healing resources of their Christian faith.

Sonshine Family Day Homes

Since 1985 Sonshine Family Day Homes Agency have been providing families in Calgary a quality alternative to day care. Sonshine Family Day Homes was the first accredited family day homes agency in the Calgary regions. Each day home meets accreditation standards in health, safety, nutrition, learning and care programming. Day home providers supply quality care for children with government approved and certified training and operate with a philosophy that all children are entitled to play, explore, learn, share and be listened to in a safe and caring environment.
